ABOUT THE NANNY

Samantha White-the nanny advisorWhen I made the choice to begin my work as a nanny, I had been working in advertising and public relations. The creative aspect of the work was rewarding and I experienced a sense of fulfillment in being good at my job but in spite of the many enjoyable aspects of my life, there was an undercurrent of discontent and disharmony that I could not ignore. There was a yearning for something more personally meaningful that I didn’t fully understand but felt acutely.

My biological clock was racing as well. I had decided to explore the possibility of having a child on my own without waiting for “Mr. Right.” A very wise friend of mine suggested that if I was thinking of becoming a mother, perhaps I ought to spend time with some actual children first. The combination of wanting a career change and wanting to explore what it might be like to have a child led me to my first nanny job.

After just a few months working as a nanny I realized that being a single parent was not the right choice for me. The intimate, day-to-day time with kids that being a nanny offered was the perfect way for me to give all the mentoring, nurturing, and teaching I had to offer and allowed me to go home at the end of a rewarding day and have time to myself for other creative endeavors.

Though I decided not to have children of my own, I am certain that my work as a nanny has made a contribution to life. At the end of the day, I have a deep sense of personal fulfillment, knowing I have made a positive difference in the life of a child.

Since I can’t take care of everyone’s children, I wanted to create something that would help parents find childcare providers who would be as committed to their children’s well being as I am, and to serve as a resource to help them maintain those relationships.

The wonderful children I have had the joy to mentor as a nanny have made me smarter, kinder, wiser and more alive than I would have been without them. It has also been some of the very best fun I’ve ever had. Thanks, kiddos. You know who I mean.

When calling references for nanny background checks try this:

After you identify yourself and the purpose of your call, ask “Is this a good time to talk?”
Ask some friendly questions about the person’s family to establish a rapport.
Make your questions yield the most information. For example, “What were some of
the things you enjoyed most about (the nanny candidate)?” Or, “What do your children say
about (the nanny candidate)?”
